The Mayans had in no certain terms predicted the planet will explode or implode on Dec. 21, 2012. But some people still worry, and many of them are calling institutions like NASA to ask doomsday questions. The scientists, in turn, have repeatedly assured those who are panicking that Earth is safe in 2012.

As far as asteroids, explosions, and implosions are concerned, Earth will continue spinning as usual long after Dec. 21 fears are gone.

12/12/12 Meaning and Dec. 21 Mayan Calendar End of the World Connection

Here is a round-up of various statements from scientists and scientific institutions regarding Mayan calendar end of the world 2012 predictions:

"It sure is a lot of fun to be worrying about the end of the world... Hollywood knows that, too... (T)he living descendants of the Mayans confirm that [the end of the Mayan calendar long cycle] means the next cycle will begin," says Astronomy professor Andrew Fraknoi. He stresses that what people should do is simply, "buy a new calendar."

The phrases "the 13th calendrical cycle will end on Dec. 21, 2012" and "This is the destruction of the world. This then is its end" were misinterpreted by many, according to Christian Wells, an associate professor of anthropology. "New Age religions have pulled these sentences out of the literary context," says the professor.

"Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012," says NASA.

"While many pundits and prognosticators lament the supposed end of the world on December 21, 2012 (thanks to misinterpreting Mayan predictions), here at the ASP we encourage everyone to go in the opposite - and accurate - direction. Thus, we are declaring December 12, 2012 as Anti-Doomsday Day in celebration of rational thinking and reasoned discourse," writes the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) in a statement.

Mayan Calendar 2012 from the point of view of a spiritual master

Louix Dor Dempriey, a spiritual master who started the Louix Dor Dempriey Foundation to "help people remember and restore their inherent divinity," also rejects the doomsday predictions associated to the Mayan calendar.

"The world is not going to come to an end on December 21st, and that's not what the Mayan calendar predicted to begin with," says Dempriey. For him and other new age believers, Dec. 21 is when a new "era" for humanity unfolds -- it certainly is not end of the world.
