'The Maze Runner' To Have Two Sequels: 'The Scorch Trials' And 'The Death Cure,' Find Out All The Details [SEE VIDEOS]
Hot on the success of "The Maze Runner," Twentieth Century Fox has announced a date for its equally interesting sequel titled "The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials." The sequel is based on the second entry in James Dashner's book series and is expected to hit theaters on Sept. 18, 2015, the same weekend as "The Maze Runner" got released.
"The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials" is not the only sequel the writer and the movie makers are focused on. Dashner has penned another sequel for the movie, and it will be titled the "The Death Cure." No release date has, however, been set for "The Death Cure." "The Scorch Trials" is based on a screenplay written by T.S. Nowlin, and its first look can be seen here. The movie's art was unveiled at the Comic Con International in July.
"The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials" is expected to face some stiff competition from another adventure and action film, "Everest," by Universal pictures. The movie will star Hollywood biggies like Jake Gyllenhaal, Robin Wright, Keira Knightley, Josh Brolin and Sam Worthington.
Meanwhile, "The Maze Runner" opened to $32.5 million over the weekend in North America and has already earned $81.5 million worldwide, various sources report. The movie has surpassed two other releases of the week, namely "A Walk Among the Tombstones" and "This Is Where I Leave You," to emerge as the highest earning film this weekend.
The thriller movie is reportedly made at a whopping budget of $34 million and stars Dylan O'Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario and Will Poulter. The adventurous movie follows O'Brien's character after he comes to his senses following a deep slumber. He has no memory and finds himself trapped inside the center of a giant maze, an area known as The Glade. O'Brien is not alone in his pursuit for exit and is accompanied by other teenage boys who, too, do not have any past memory left.
The group of teenage boys are threatened by Grievers, nocturnal creatures living inside the maze who are in pursuit to kill the Gladers. The movie, based on the 2010 bestseller science fiction book "The Maze Runner" by James Dashner, tells the story of how the boys look for a way out of the maze with the help of a mysterious girl.
