A hardcore film that has "gay zombie porn" has been removed from the Melbourne International Film Festival.

The Australian Classification Board has considered L.A. Zombie, from Toronto-based filmmaker Brice LaBruce, as unsuitable after it watched the film on DVD.

The movie, which is described to have "plenty of wound-shagging and more penises than you can shake a stick at", is still being endorsed on the festival website, along with its trailer.

The story is about a schizophrenic homeless man who thinks he is an alien zombie.

French gay porn star Francois Saga plays the lead character who wanders around Los Angeles "in search of dead bodies and gay sex" and finds out about his gift of "shagging the deceased back to life".

The festival does not agree with the board's ruling but is still thinking if it would appeal the decision.

''Bruce LaBruce's blend of sex and violence can be confronting, but I would argue that within the context of the festival, it is nonsensical and patronising to not allow people to decide what they want to see," said festival director Richard Moore.

The world premiere of the film is set next week in Switzerland.

LaBruce's last gay zombie film Otto (Up with Dead People) was showed at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008.
