Melbourne’s ‘True Blood’ Chronicle: Vampire Killer Mark Adrian Perry Arrested in Perth
Mark Adrian Perry, more popularly known to Australians as the "Vampire Killer" for murdering self-confessed vampire Shane Chartres-Abbott, was finally arrested after a decade long man hunt and a $1 million reward on his head. He was arrested in a factory in Perth suburb of Morley on Wednesday night, July 3 2013.
Mr Perry was arrested through the police's strategic swoop at the factory where he worked after being untraceable for six years.
Acting inspector Dale Flynn told ABC that Mr Perry's extradition to Victoria and he was set to be flown back to Melbourne on Friday, July 5 2013.
Mr Flynn said "When you have an arrest phase, it's always a significant milestone in any investigation but there's still a lot of work in front of us and the investigation is ongoing."
"True Blood"
Back in August 2002, self-acclaimed vampire Shane Chartres-Abbott was caught red handed just within minutes after his attack to a Thai woman. His victim's blood stained his pants and her phone was still in his bag.
The woman was discovered by staff at the South Yarra Saville Hotel with bite marks and bruises all over her body. She was brutally raped and her tongue was missing a part because her attacker had bit off part of it. The woman gave her statement to the police saying that Mr Chartres-Abbott started a small talk saying he was a 200-year-old vampire.
Police immediately got hold of forensic evidence, medical reports and the written statement by the victim to immediately have Mr Chartres-Abbott convicted of the crime.
However, during his trial, Mr Chartres-Abbott weaved a very out of ordinary defence that made his case all the more sensational. According to him, he was the real victim as the woman told him that syndicate bosses want to make a murder-plot movie with him being really dead at the end.
In 2003, Mr Chartres-Abbott was shot on his way to another trial in court.
Shane Chartres-Abbott, The Vampire
The self-confessed vampire was a male prostitute whose 'specialisation' was rough sex with both male and female clients.
An article from The Age in July 2003 went into the detail of the dark life that he was living.
According to the article, Mr Chartres-Abbott joined the violent and secret world of organized sex syndicate in 2000. He decided to engage himself to the dark world because he was not earning enough as a street walker.
He started his journey into the murky world of sex working as a Male to Male escort in Balwyn where he was famously known as 'Simon'. He was so famous he can charged clients for as much as $2000 for a night of adventurous sex.
He married in mid-1990's and had a son. Later, his wife became known as a prostitute working at the Top of the Town brothel off King Street and in Coburg. They broke-up in 2000 but he was inspired seeing how much his wife was earning at brothels and told himself that he can earn as much. Hence, entering the world of organized sex crime.
Mr Chartres-Abbott was at ease entering this dark world because he had always been living in a dirty, sickening past with his father who allegedly sexually and physically abused them.
His father has 10 children who all experienced the harsh reality of life - three died because of drug abused and murder; two were in jail; another two were out living in the streets and one worked as a prostitute in a brothel in Melbourne.
One brother who was able to be interviewed by The Age lives in an abandoned car in a bush in Bendigo. He said that their father ran his own brothel and that all of them children suffered abused by both male and female customers.
Mark Adrian Perry, The Vampire Killer
Mr Perry was handsome and has his way to women. But, he was particularly attracted to Thai women.
In 2000 he moved in with a Thai woman whom he had a son. Unfortunately, the Thai woman was deep into the sex industry that they broke-up 18 months after moving-in together.
They remained friends since then that when she was raped in August 2002 by 'the vampire', Mr Perry vowed for vengeance.
He was motivated by guilt telling friend that if he had not left her, she would not have suffered in the hands of Mr Chartres-Abbott.
According to an October 2009 report from the Sydney Morning Herald, Mr Perry planned killing Mr Chartres-Abbott from August 2002 until mid-2003 bribing hired killers for money and drugs just to kill him. He was even able to drag corrupt police officers to the did.
He used to live life comfortably as a drug dealer and in fact has traveled around Asia, South America and Europe. He was a gym-junkie who once owned his own personal training company.
He can be charming at times but as soon as his mood attacks, he disappeared for a long time with his whereabouts unknown.
However, he was not able to use his money wisely as he did not invest on assets and does not even have his own car. He spent most of his money bribing people to help him. He was very terrified of being jailed.
In 2009 police got a hint that with his cash gone, Mr Perry hide behind the black economy accepting jobs as a butcher, plumber or builder.
