Melissa Rivers Is Suing The Doctor Who Perfomed Endoscopy On Joan Rivers
Melissa Rivers is planning to sue the doctor who performed her mother's biopsy, which triggered the heart attack eventually leading to the late comedienne's death.
Yorkville Endoscopy clinic came under fire when 81-year-old Joan Rivers, who only went for a routine checkup to enquire why her voice has gone raspy, died under their care. The doctor, who handled her check-up, reportedly decided to perform endoscopy for further examination.
During the endoscopy procedure, the star suffered a heart attack. She was rushed immediately to Mount Sinai Hospital where she later went in coma and succumbed to the same after a week.
As reported by CBS New York, Rivers' personal doctor, Dr. Gwen Korovin, performed a biopsy on the late comedienne at the clinic. During the process, the Rivers suffered laryngospasm, which is a kind of seizure in vocal cord. This cut off her air supply, triggering a heart attack.
A source close to Melissa Rivers told Daily Mail that she has decided to sue Dr. Korovin. The doctor is quite renowned and reputed with a star studded clientele, which include Mick Jagger and Celine Dion.
Despite this tragic incident, endoscopy is known to be a process. The doctors performing the same are well trained to handle any kind of complication which can occur during the procedure. Hence, questions are being raised on various aspects that led to Rivers' death.
The decision to rush the patient from the endoscopy clinic to Mount Sinai Hospital is also under investigation. Endoscopy clinics are usually well equipped with medical emergency needs to ensure that sudden complications would be attended immediately.
There are also proper guidelines on how to handle such cases. Professionals who perform endoscopy are trained to control a spasm if it occurs during the procedure. It can be done by hyperextending the neck or by giving emergency sedatives to relax the muscles.
Since the late comedian's untimely death, such points were being questioned by many people including Dr. Lillian Glass who treated Rivers in 1987 for vocal cord stress.
Despite her old age, Rivers was said to be in good health prior her death. In fact, the host of Fashion Police led an absolutely active and healthy lifestyle.
