Menopause Does Not Bring An End To Sex Life, Reveals Study
According to a latest study, menopause does not mean that no further improvement can take place in the concerned woman's sex life. The research has scrapped all the previous thoughts of menopausal hormonal changes leading to a decrease in woman's sexual drive.
During the study, the research team led by Dr Tim Spector from King's College, London, studied and analysed the four-year worth of answers 507 British women gave about their sex lives and sexual health, before and after menopause. The research was the first one of its own kind, attempting to study how different aspects related to sexuality, including arousal, orgasm, pain and desire, change over a period of time.
The researchers were expecting to see that the problems with sexual drive and desire would increase with time as the women approach towards menopausal age. Interestingly, the study results revealed that the rate of sexual dysfunction remained almost constant over the period of four years.
Both pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women were at a 22 to 23 percent risk of suffering from sexual dysfunction. This led researchers to believe that menopause does not necessarily mean an end to women's sexual drive or a reason behind increased sexual issues.
“We were surprised by the results a little bit. They suggest that menopause has been exaggerated as an excuse for everything,” said Spector, reported TIME.
Menopause is marked by a decrease in oestrogen level in the woman's body and an also bring an end to a woman's reproductive life. That means, it brings an end to the normal menstrual cycle. Menopause also brings with itself other temporary symptoms, including hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness and sleep disturbances.
The research has been published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
