In The Mentalist Season 6, Episode 2, "Black-Winged Redbird," Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) gets to talk to 3 Red John suspects at CBI. Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) is not hurt, and Brett Partridge (Jack Plotnick) is officially dead. The episode reveals Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Kimball Cho (Tim Kang) agree on CBI director Gale Bertram as their prime RJ suspect.

"I sense something deceptive and dark in his emotional make-up," says Jane's former psychiatrist Sophie Miller (Elisabeth Röhm) in The Mentalist Season 6, Episode 2, Black-Winged Redbird. She's describing Jay Roth (Jay Red in German), whom Patrick Jane presumes to be Red John himself.

Miller states in her post-session notes: Red John or Jay Roth is middle-aged and in good health. No priors in psychiatric issues. He has no family, but has many friends. He is well-spoken and shows good posture. (Not accurate for whistling FBI agent Reede Smith.) He's an excellent whistler. (Cut to a whistling Sheriff McAllister.) And he shows hints of a narcissistic personality.

This latest Red John description in The Mentalist Season 6, Episode 2 is the most elaborate since Rosalind Harker (Alicia Witt) described the serial killer in Season 1. Red John, says Rosalind, is not more than 6 feet tall. He has short, straight hair, and he possesses a gentle voice.

For some viewers, the list of Red John suspects is down to Bob Kirkland (Kevin Corrigan) and Ray Haffner (Reed Diamond). The Mentalist Season 6 is expected to show more of these two characters, moving forward.

Gale Bertram (Michael Gaston) and Bret Stiles (Malcolm McDowell) join Kirkland and Haffner in some fans' Top 4 suspects. They both enjoy showmanship, and they are well-connected in the VIP circle. But a number of episodes in the past five seasons could only lead to these two being Red John accomplices. The Mentalist Season 6, Episode 2 has thrown the spotlight to Bertram. But it could be another misdirection.

Now Sheriff McAllister (Xander Berkeley) and Reede Smith (Drew Powell) are not among the top suspects in the show's online forum discussions. The two have not been seen much the past seasons. But in The Mentalist Season 6, Episode 2, they join Bertram for a supposedly anti-narcotics meeting. Naturally, Jane and Lisbon become suspicious.

Series creator Bruno Heller has stated that more suspects will be knocked off within a few more episodes of The Mentalist Season 6. Simon Baker has earlier said Red John could be revealed within the calendar year. For Mentalista fans, this is the best time to speculate on Red John's real identity.
