Mexico Gathers 10,000 ‘Zombies’ in Bid for World Record
Mexicans claim they have a set a new world record for the largest "zombie walk" when 10,000 of them dressed as undead marched in Mexico's capital on Saturday.
The participants wearing ghoulish makeup, torn shirts and fake blood assembled at Mexico City's Monument to the Revolution before marching to Zocalo square. Their number easily beats the current Guinness world record of 4,093 "zombies" who assembled in Asbury Park in New Jersey, USA on Oct. 30, 2010. It is also exceeds the 8,000 Australian "zombies" who marched in Brisbane in October in a separate bid to break the world record.
The zombie walk, which was inspired by movies, TV shows, video games and literature about the living dead, has become a world craze. Thousands of people dressed as zombies marched in Lima, Peru on Friday, in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Nov. 2 and in Santiago, Chile on Oct. 15.
The Brisbane version on Oct. 23 assembled 10,000 in Wickham Park and joined by thousands more during the march along Adelaide Street en route to King George Square. But organizers said only 8,000 were counted as others were late in joining the march.
The Brisbane Zombie Walk was a fundraiser at the same time. It raised $24,000 for the Brain Foundation of Australia.
