Michael Douglas: Spokesman Denies Oral Sex Caused the Veteran Actor’s Throat Cancer
Veteran actor Michael Douglas reportedly stated in his interview with "The Guardian" newspaper that oral sex caused his battle with throat cancer. Douglas' spokesman Allen Burry immediately denied the reports and maintained that the 68-year-old actor only discussed the connection between oral sex and throat cancer.
"Michael did not say cunnilingus was the cause of his cancer," Allen Burry revealed to AFP. "He certainly discussed oral sex in the article and oral sex is a suspected cause of certain oral cancers, as the doctors in the article did point out. But he did not say this was the specific cause of his personal cancer," the spokesman further stated.
"Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV which actually comes about from cunnilingus," Douglas stated in the interview. The spokesman claims that the actor was speaking in general terms and not personally.
In 2010, Academy Award-winning actor Michael Douglas revealed that he was battling his stage-four cancer. Michael Douglas was able to defeat the disease after going through a series of chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions.
The Guardian News Media spokesperson revealed that they did not receive any complaint about the published article from the Hollywood veteran actor or his representatives. Still, the company stated that: "We would of course investigate any complaints about our journalism that we received."
Oral cancer rates have been increasing for the past ten years with the major risk factors identified as drinking alcohol and smoking. Approximately 25% of the mouth and 35% of throat cancers are connected to the HPV infection.
"HPV is present within the fluids that are part of oral sexual behavior," Dr. Marshall Posner, director of the head and neck oncology program at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, revealed. Dr. Posner further added that there is a possibility for the virus to be acquired if a person kisses someone who performed oral sex on someone else who has the virus.
