Microsoft (MSFT), Apple Inc (AAPL) Join Forces, Releases Office Mobile App for iPhone; Analysts Divided on Impact
Microsoft's Office software package will be finally available in Apple products specifically the iPhone. Now, iPhone users can read and edit documents, slide presentations and excel sheets just like in any Windows computer. It is an office or workstation within convenient access.
The company will not offer Office for iPads and nor will it provide the same application on Android devices. Microsoft is concentrating on creating a solid consumer base particularly with the $100-a-year Office subscription. The company wants to transform the application into a compelling program without taking the advantage tablet users have.
Most tablets run on Microsoft Windows system. They also have the capacity to run common and popular applications such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Office Mobile is available for download at the app store. Apple is offering the application for free.
However, users need to subscribe to Office 365 to use the program properly. The subscription grants user access to Office up to five Windows and Mac computers. An annual fee needs to be settled first prior to using the entire platform. The subscription is more expensive compared to purchasing a package for a computer but the application for iPhone will not be sold separately.
Analysts are still torn whether the strategy will be effective on Apple and Microsoft. Many are skeptical whether this will boost revenues for Microsoft especially with their office product. Bob O'Donnel from IDC looks at it more positively.
"It will push some to move to Office 365, but the challenge is that customers are not crazy about [subscriptions]. They're still tough for people to swallow," O'Donnell said.
