The social media is abuzz with posts like "RIP Miley Cyrus" and "Is Miley Cyrus Dead?" which could have the Smilers worried. There is also a fake image of the 21-year-old singer on the page, which appears to be a BBC news Web site. The story claims that the singer died on January 23, 2014 because of "drug and alcohol abuse."

But worry not as there is no such truth the the news of Miley Cyrus' death from recognised news agencies. The "Wrecking Ball" singer is surely the latest victim of a cruel Internet hoax just like many celebrities have been in the past.

According to Urban Legends, the Web site that published the fake story, there is also an obituary for the pop singer. "The Parents Television Council have already been in contact with Miley's family, discussing what has happened," said the site.

"She'll not only be missed by her family and friends, but by her millions of fans, though she had lost a substantial amount with her dramatic change that was not favoured by many. Miley will be missed," adds the report. You can see the fake story here.

"At about 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday (January 22, 2014), our beloved actress Miley Cyrus passed away. Miley Cyrus was born on November 23, 1992 in Nashville. She will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page," states the hoax.

Hundreds of fans posted their condolences on various social media platforms. But the news it not true and many fans also expressed their anger for posting such baseless news.

Isn't it surprising that the Internet hoax about Miley's death coincides with the day of arrest for Justin Bieber? The singer too was arrested on January 23. And surprisingly there is another Internet hoax doing the rounds which says Justin Bieber was caught masturbating in his jail cell after he was arrested for Driving Under Influence in Miami! The trend of celebrity death hoax started in 2013 and looks like is here to stay in 2014.
