Miley Cyrus To Face Probe By Dutch Authorities For Smoking
The Dutch authorities are investigating the latest stunt that Miley Cyrus pulled off during the MTV Europe Music Awards.
During the event held Sunday night at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, the 20-year-old singer lit up a rolled piece stuck into her mouth then puffed it before she left the stage after receiving the Best Video award.
Whether the 'Wrecking Ball' singer smoked marijuana, tobacco or salvia that night was unclear to this day, but Dutch authorities will have to call upon Cyrus for violating smoking laws.
"We received complaints about smoking which was also seen on television. We have to investigate," Tjitte Mastenbroek of the National Food and Consumer Authority (NVWA) told AFP on Tuesday.
"We will shortly be meeting the Ziggo Dome's management to check what exactly happened there."
"After meeting the Ziggo Dome's management we will decide whether possible steps will be taken," Mastenbroek added.
Event Venue Spokesman Danni Damman said they follow a strict non-smoking policy, and the management instructed its security to extinguish any cigarette lighted up by the audience. But he told AFP that Cyrus's smoking "caught us by surprise. It's not easy to interfere in a moment like that."
The Netherlands outlaws marijuana but in 1976, its government decriminalizes its possession so long as it is less than five grams in weight. In addition, the country also observes a strict ban against smoking in public places.
"There is a smoking ban in public places in the Netherlands. Employees have the right to a smoke-free environment and this includes camera and sound personnel," Mastenbroek said.
MTV cut the smoking part during its rebroadcast, replacing the scene with footage of the audience. For her part, Cyrus reacted over the cut Monday via Twitter with 'Sometimes in life you just gotta decide to not give a f***.'
