Singer Miley Cyrus arrives at the 41st American Music Awards in Los Angeles, California November 24, 2013.

The 9th annual list of the top searches on Yahoo Canada is out and Miley Cyrus tops the list.

Cyrus, who has had a pretty eventful year so far, beats Toronto mayor Rob Ford who finishes second in the list. She grabbed enough attention in 2013 with her seemingly desperate attempts to break away from her teenage sweet-heart Hannah Montana image. She caused huge controversy with her provocative performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Mr Ford, on the other hand, became the second most searched person in Canada with his scandal related to his consumption of crack cocaine. It is pretty unusual for a politician to be among the top searched personalities in any country as the list is generally crowded with people from the show business.

The 3rd in the list is BlackBerry, the mobile giant, which also had a pretty eventful year. It beats the all-time favourite celebrity Kim Kardashian. Her new born baby, post-baby body transformation and her engagement ring - everything has been a craze in the social media. Kardashian is at the 4th place. "Fifty Shades of Grey" the much appreciated book is at the 5th position. The author of the book launched a wine collection of the same name in 2013.

As far as the top news stories are concerned, the murder of Tim Bosma from Hamilton, Ontario snatched the number 1 spot on the Yahoo Canada list. The 2nd in the list was the Boston Marathon explosions while the 3rd position was secured by the new stories related to the selection of a new pope. The next in the line were the Cleveland kidnappings and the southern Alberta flooding.

According to Yahoo Canada, the current scandal of Senate expenditure tops searches related to Political and Economic issues. The 2nd on the list happens to be the race in the Liberal leadership.

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who was shot by the Taliban, was the top newsmaker in 2013. She influenced a huge number of people, especially from the West, with her courage. She became the youngest Nobel nominee ever. Many did not find it acceptable that she did not bag the Nobel Peace. Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower, is the 2nd newsmaker of 2013.
