Miley Cyrus' parents are divorcing. Billy Ray and Trish Cyrus had sought divorce citing irreconcilable differences according to the papers filed in a Tennessee court.

TMZ reported that that it was Miley's father, Billy Ray, who filed for divorce. Billy Ray sought "shared" custody of his and Trish's 3 minor children. The couple has five children, including Miley,17.

Billy Ray also asked the court to approve a proposed parenting plan. At the same time, Miley's father is seeking an equitable distribution of his and Trish's marital estate.

The couple told People that the divorce is a very difficult time for their family. "We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers." Billy Ray and Trish Cyrus had been married for 17 years.
