Miss Universe 2013 Dedicates Pageant's Finale to Vietnam, Philippines
Known as the strongest typhoon on record to ever strike the Philippines, Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda forced thousands of Filipinos to abandon their homes on November 8 the day before the Coronation Night of the 62nd edition of Miss Universe. Pageant's host Thomas Roberts announced before the final announcement of this year's Miss Universe that the pageant's finale is dedicated to Vietnam and Philippines.
The whole world already knows what Haiyan or Yolanda has done to the islands of the Philippines that it forced thousands of families from their homes and knocked out power and communications in several provinces. Known as one the strongest typhoons on record to ever strike Philippines, Haiyan has left the Philippines early Saturday and is expected to pick up renewed strength over the South China Sea on its way to its next target, Vietnam.
According to the latest news, Haiyan has an estimated death toll of 10,000 people in Central Philippines but as of now the government disaster agency can only confirm 150 deaths. Haiyan hit land fall with sustained wind above 190 miles per hour and left the City of Tacloban in central Philippines in serious storm surge.
The super typhoon has affected 4.28 million people in about 270 towns and cities spread across 36 provinces where the eye of the storm hit. Sebastian Rhodes Stampa of United Nations disaster assessment team is shock about the scale of the damage. "This is destruction on a massive scale. There are cars thrown like tumbleweed," he said in an interview in the article posted in The New York Times.
While the 86 candidates from across the globe are competing for the Diamond Nexus crown, people from the Philippines especially the ones in affected areas is busy looking for their missing loved ones who might be dead due to the immense destruction of the typhoon. Philippine's bet Ariella Arida send her prayers to her fellow Filipinos and asking them to be strong in this time of need.
Arida managed to land a spot in the Top 5 and was hailed as Miss Universe 2013 Third Runner-up. Garbriela Isler from Venezuela was crowned as the 62nd Miss Universe, the 7th Miss Universe of Venezuela, in Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia.
