Miss Universe 2013: Miss Malaysia Unveils $800 Traditional 'Songket' Dress for The Final Night [PHOTOS and VIDEO]
Tradition has won over fashion for the Miss Malaysia, Carey Ng, contesting for the upcoming Miss Universe 2013. The 24-year-old ex-ballerina has chosen to represent the traditions of her country though a Terengganu "songket" for the final night of the on the 62nd coronation night of the Miss Universe pageant on November 6 in Moscow.
"Proud to be showcasing Malaysia through this!" an excited Ng posted on her Instagram page along with her picture in the traditional dress which was done in black and golden colour.
"Inspired by Puteri Perak, It's pantsuit fashion is unique to its time and culture. It is a true representation of strength in women. A "traditional" take on power suit, relevant to both empowered modern women in Malaysia and our tradition," she writes in another post on Instagram dishing out more details about the attire.
Carey will be wearing the beautiful dress for the Miss Universe "Best In National Costume" category, where the beauty queens from around the world are required to wear the traditional dresses from their country. Miss Malaysia will wear the traditional "songket" dress. A songket is hand-woven silk or cotton fabric of Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia. The fabric is intricately patterned with gold or silver threads and looks amazing.
An excited Miss Malaysia Universe also posted a video of herself wearing the dress and strutting in high heels. The piece of art is designed by Kuala Lumpur-based designed Syomir Izwa and he has named it "The Princess of Perak." The costume consists of flowy pants, top, and a wrap-around. The dress doesn't come cheap and you will be surprised to know that only the fabric costs around $8000!
"I used 12 metres of 'songket' and the total cost is RM25, 000 (7932.73 US Dollar) since some of the 'songket' are vintage while some are custom-made," said Izwa in a report posted by The Star.
Miss Universe 2013 is slated to take place on November 9 but the national costumes will be displayed on November 5, at Moscow's Crocus City Hall. It MSNBC anchor, Thomas Roberts, and ex-Spice Girl, Mel B have been announced as hosts for the show.
