Miss Universe 2015 Recap: Shocking twist sees Miss Colombia lose her crown to Miss Philippines
The 64th Miss Universe Pageant, the most nail biting beauty pageant of the year, was held on Sunday, Dec. 20, at the Planet Hollywood resort and Casino, Las Vegas. Paulina Vega of Colombia crowned Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines the new Miss Universe, but there was a big twist to this winner's moment. Here is a recap of what happened in the final round of Miss Universe 2015:
The Prelims continue:
The night started off with eighty contestants showcasing their national costumes. Miss Thailand Aniporn Chalermburanawong won the award for the best national costume. She was dressed as a Tuk Tuk from her country. Miss Thailand made it to the top ten.
The Top 15:
The top 15 contestant were from Brazil, Australia, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, the Philippines, France, USA, Curacao, Belgium, Japan, Venezuela, South Africa, Colombia, Mexico and Thailand. These beauties reached the quarterfinal round.
The Top 10:
The quarterfinalists showed off their perfectly toned figures in the swimsuit round, wearing Yamamay swimsuits. The contestants paraded on the stage as Charlie Puth performed live at the axis. The judges then selected 10 contestants from the 15 for the semifinal round.
USA, Colombia, Japan, Thailand, Australia, Dominican Republic, Curaco, France, Philippines and Venezuela made it to the top 10.
Final 5
The semi-finalists hiked up the glamour quotient on the stage when they dazzled the audience with their evening gowns. After the evening gown round, only five made it to the top 5: Miss Australia, Miss France, Miss Colombia, Miss Philippines and Miss USA.
Miss USA looked glamorous and poised in a white gown, while France wore a red gown with a front slit. Miss Colombia looked chic in a strapless evening gown, and Miss Australia’s plunging neck evening gown looked stunning. Miss Philippines looked gorgeous in a blue evening gown.
Final Eliminations:
The question round saw the five finalists giving smart replies to judges' questions. Miss Australia was asked what she thinks about legalising marijuana in Australia. She replied that the legalisation has helped a few, but the government must still weigh both sides of the issue.
Miss France was asked about how to combat terrorism in the wake of the Paris attacks. She suggested getting to the root of the issue by talking to the people responsible for the attacks. Miss Colombia was asked about the ways to handle drug abuse. She said that education was the key. Miss USA was asked about gun control, and she replied that her country needed “stronger regulations.” Miss Philippines was asked about the U.S. military entering her country. She said her country should be more welcoming.
The Final Three:
Miss Philippines, Miss USA and Miss Colombia were declared the three finalists. Miss Australia, who had put up a good show, did not make it to the top three.
In the deciding round, all the three contestants were asked why they should be crowned Miss Universe. Miss USA said that if she was crowned, she would empower women all over the world and inspire people to believe in themselves. Miss Colombia felt that the crown must be hers as she has “all the attributes that a Latin woman has, a woman that is full of feeling, and a Miss Universe should have for all of her events."
Miss Philippines said that she would want to work to spread awareness about HIV. She added that she wanted the world to see that she was “confidently beautiful with a heart."
The Crowning Moment- Colombia or the Philippines
With the whole world waiting to know who was Miss Universe 2015, host Steve Harvey made a colossal blunder when he announced the wrong Miss Universe 2015 “by mistake.”
One second Miss Colombia was waving to the crowd after being declared the 64th Miss Universe, and the next moment, Harvey awkwardly interrupted the celebration and announced that he made a mistake, Miss Philippines was the actual winner, while Miss Colombia was the first runner up. He apologised profusely, later, but the damange was done.
Everyone’s heart went out to Miss Colombia as she was decrowned, just moments after she was mistakenly crowned Miss Universe.
Miss Philippines too looked baffled, unsure about how to react after being crowned.
The event was judged by former Dallas Cowboys player and “Dancing with the Stars” winner Emmitt Smith, actress Niecy Nash, Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo and television personality Perez Hilton. Charlie Puth, Band Perry and Seal performed at the event.
