Miss Venezuela, Ivian Lunasol Sarcos Colmenares, was crowned Miss World 2011 in London Sunday evening. The 60th anniversary of the beauty pageant was marked at the Earls Court in west London.

Runners up were Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Gaelle Sandrine Ruais, and Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Victoria Vilanova Perez. Other contestants who made it to the top seven finalists are Miss England, Miss Korea, Miss Scotland and Miss South Africa.

Several special awards were given to the contestants throughout the two-week competition in London. Miss Venezuela was the highest scorer in the pre-pageant interview round while Miss Dominican Republic, Marianly Tejado Burgos, was hailed as the General Sports Champion. Miss England, Alize Lily Mounter, was given the Beach Beauty award while Miss Kazakhstan, Zhanna Zhumaliyeva, was called the Top Model.

Miss Chile, Gabriela Paz Pulgar Luco, was given accolades for her talent. Miss Ghana, Stephani Karikari, and Miss Indonesia, Astrid Yunadi, shared the award for Beauty with a Purpose as their charity projects were highlighted during the pageant.

Miss Bulgaria, Vanya Peneva, was awarded the People's Choice award for topping the online poll that was conducted prior to the final coronation night. She garnered 51.5 percent of the votes of the online poll on Missosology.org that ran from Oct. 18 through Sunday. Runners up for this special award were Miss Georgia and Miss Philippines.

Miss World is expected to be the spokeswoman and the leader in various global charity projects that are under the Miss World Beauty with a Purpose Program.

Even if the beauty pageant was a success, protesters still gathered at Earls Court as they rallied against the pageant as an insult to women's equality.

However, Angie Beasley, the director of Miss England pageant, said the competition is not just about looking good in swimwear.

"The message that the competition is now about brains as well as beauty was shown by figures that revealed out of this year's contestants, more than half are studying for a degree, one in four are graduates and more than half speak at least three languages," she said.

The 61st Miss World will be held in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China.
