"I love Big Bird, but..." Wait. What did he just say?

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has probably realized by now that Big Bird could rival him well in terms of gathering support from the Americans. A presidential candidate does not simply announce that he "loves Big Bird" without expecting a surge of memes on the internet. Especially if Big Bird will lose his job.

The funny memes started popping out on the microblogging site Twitter while Wednesday's presidential debate in Denver was ongoing.

Romney reiterated his defund-PBS plan to moderator and PBS newscaster Jim Lehrer, saying he is not willing to "borrow from China" to subsidize public broadcasting.

"I'm sorry, Jim, I'm going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I like you too," Romney said.

The way he said it sparked strong reactions on social networks. Those who got time quickly went to generating funny (and some angry) memes.

The overarching theme of the memes? Big Bird will lose his job.

But Big Bird is not alone. In fact, astrophysicist and StarTalk Radio host Neil deGrasse Tyson simplified the matter for everyone to understand the PBS situation in relation to the U.S. budget:

"Cutting PBS support (0.012% of budget) to help balance the Federal budget is like deleting text files to make room on your 500Gig hard drive"

This post was retweeted over 30,000 times and favorited 5,000 times within two hours.

The funny memes may have more to do with the meme generators than the presidential candidate. But the memes do not entirely detach Romney from the root of the humour.

Now, will this 'Big Bird' memes serve Romney well on the day of the elections?
