MLB News: Marco Scutaro Has Back Surgery, Baseball Career Still Up In The Air
San Francisco Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro underwent back surgery last Friday and doctors estimate that 4 to 6 months are needed before they can decide if Scutaro will be healthy enough to return to baseball. At 39 years old, Scutaro has suffered from back problems in recent seasons and will begin a long rehab from the said surgery.
Owing to great numbers in the 2012 season, he earned a 3-year $20 million deal from the San Francisco Giants that season. Scutaro was named the Most Valuable Player in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) where he had a record 14 hits. Scutaro, who was born in San Felipe, Yaracuy, Venezuela and has an Italian descent made his MLB debut July 27, 2002 for the New York Mets. Scutaro was one of the mainfeatures of the 2005 documentary "A Player to be Named Later."
''This is the type of thing, it's four-to-six months before we can know if baseball is possible,'' Giants general manager Brian Sabean said per Yahoo Sports of Scutaro’s surgery and injury. ''I don't want to speak for the doctor or the procedure but you'd have to how he responds to the surgery and that's months away.''
Scutaro, who is a career .277 hitter with 77 home runs and 509 hits, has played of the New York Mets (2002 to 2003), Oakland Athletics (2004 to 2007), Toronto Blue Jays (2008 to 2009), Boston Red Sox (2010 to 2011), Colorado Rockies (2012) and San Francisco Giants (2012 to present).
