MMA News: Holly Holm Reveals Why She Left Boxing
Holly Holm is one of boxing's most successful women boxers. Sporting a record of 33-2-3 her entire career as well as winning the title at both the light welterweight and welterweight, it was hard to imagine her leaving the sport where she had found success her all life. After all she is a two-time Hall of Famer and was inducted into the Hall of Fame juts last year. Now, in a piece published by Yahoo, she reveals what sparked her jumped to mixed martial arts at the peak of her career.
The multi-time world champion said that it was simple case of waning passion for boxing and her newfound love for mixed martial arts that made her decide to take up the Octagon full time. After her last boxing bout in May 2013 handily defeating Mary McGee, her promoter informed her that he has another bout lined up in the next few months.
The talented boxer revealed that after she heard those words, all she could think about was to wrestle and kick box and then and there decided that she would only continue boxing if her heart feels up to it. Next thing, she knew she signed up with MMA and corralled four straight wins the last of which dealt her a fractured arm that sidelined her for a couple of months. Now that she has a test comeback match on her sights this December against Raquel Pennignton at UFC 181, Holm is upstart about continuing her path to the top in the UFC. She however admits that while she has a lot of expertise at boxing, she is still in the infancy stages when it comes to mixed martial arts.
"I was around boxing a long time and not just around boxing, but at a high level," she said. "I have a lot of experience in boxing against a lot of really high quality opposition. But in transitioning to MMA, there is so much to learn and I'm still on that learning curve.
That learning curve that she wants to develop is already being touted by many experts as the only way someone can challenge women's MMA best fighter Ronda Rousey. Holm has always been respectful of the reigning women' bantamweight champion and stated that she is trying hard to close the gap between her and Rowdy. She said that anybody who has high hopes of defeating Rousey should have a sound game plan of getting past her takedowns and use other means such as striking from a distance or use their agility to avoid the mat. This early, it would still be premature to line her up as a top contender to the undefeated fighter, yet Holm is sure on the right path to developing her game and in some ways, the threat to the UFC's darling.
