'Modern Family' Episode 2 Recap: Alex Goes In Search Of A College And Finds A New Love Interest

In the premiere episode of "Modern Family's season 6, Alex Dunphy returned home to find that her family was happier while she was away. On the second episode entitled "Do Not Push," she gets entirely the opposite treatment as her mom Claire pushes her to go to a University that's only 45 minutes away so that she'll be close to home.

The entire Dunphy household trekked of to the Caltech campus to accompany Alex on her college tour. Alex looked bored but Claire was enthusiastic and kept pointing out the good points about the campus. Claire later admitted that she's pushing for Caltech because it's only 45 minutes away which means that they can keep their daughter close. She airs out her concern that once Alex graduates, she will probably head out to a bio dome in Neptune that she invented. In the last episode, the family discovered that they all needed Alex in the house to help save them from their own immature and clumsy behaviour.

While Phil, Haley and Luke walked off to try out a psych experiment which promises to pay them $50 on campus, Claire continued the tour with Alex and was gushing about everything that the guide was saying. Alex called her out for it and asked her to relax. She then explained that it didn't matter how nice the school was because she wouldn't choose it anyway. Claire asked her why and Alex was forced to admit that she didn't want to stay too close to home and needed a break from her family. Claire is devastated but Alex stuck to her guns. The guide then asked the parents to leave their kids for the next part of the tour and Alex then went on to continue her tour, leaving a disappointed Claire to ponder what she just said.

While Alex was off on her own in the tour, her attention was caught by one of the other students on tour who seems to share her penchant for all things scientific. The two hit if off immediately and shared their opinions about which college to choose. Alex said that she wanted to go to MIT, a school on the other side of the country. Her new friend Jason said that he actually lives in Boston where MIT is located and would prefer staying close to home where he can get home cooked meals on the weekends and someone to do his laundry. He pointed out that he only wants to go to Caltech because of their superior Applied Physics program and he didn't want to choose his school based on his family.

Alex then contemplated what he said and realised that he has a point. The two went on flirting with each other throughout the tour but parted when the tour ended. Alex then told Claire that she's not too sure about taking Caltech off the list of choices after all. Claire is delighted and immediately realised that Alex might have found something else that she wasn't ready to let go off just yet. It remains to be seen if Alex and her new friend Jason Darling will meet again in future episodes.
