Episode 4 of this sixth season of "Modern Family" touches on a new phase in Manny's life. Having started the show as a little boy, Manny is now a teenager and he is starting to discover new things while growing up. In this episode, Manny gets his first real girlfriend, which, as expected, didn't go well with his overprotective mom, Gloria.

Manny had been going out with his older friend Sam and Gloria started wondering about her son's new friend. She told Jay that she feels that something is suspicious about Manny's recent behaviour and she wants to learn more about Sam. She felt that Sam could be a bad influence on her son.

When Manny arrived from a night out with Sam, Gloria asked Jay to check what they were doing since they always seem to hang out for a few minutes by the door before Manny goes inside. Jay investigated and saw that Sam is actually a girl and the two were kissing.

Gloria was shaken and shocked by the discovery. Even Jay was shocked saying that Manny's first girlfriend is a pretty senior who drives a Mustang when he expected his first girlfriend to be a sophomore with a moustache. Jay tried to talk with Sam on the driveway to warn her to behave, but Manny caught him and told him not to meddle.

The following day, Gloria confronted Manny about Sam whom she said is actually a girl with the name of a boy. Manny said that he knew Gloria would be spying on him and he refused to introduce Sam to his mom for fear that she would overreact. He just said that she's smart, pretty and the school's "It Girl." He also said that Sam dumped the team captain of the basketball team for him.

Gloria remained suspicious but let Manny have his way to avoid conflict. When Jay and Gloria went to see Manny's football game, they observed Sam on the stands as she held up a sign cheering Manny on. When Jay got up to grab refreshments, he spotted Sam kissing another boy but he decided to stay quiet about it as he didn't want to break Manny's heart or face Gloria's wrath.

The team eventually won their football game and upon returning home, Jay noticed that Manny is not in a celebratory mood. He tried talking to him but Manny resisted. He poked even more and Manny eventually admitted that Sam had dumped him because she was only using him to make her ex-boyfriend jealous. Now she's back with him and she dumped him through text while she was making out with her boyfriend.

Jay played the wise old dad part and offered Manny a hug and some words of wisdom. He also offered him a sip of Scotch. Gloria saw what was happening and instead of meddling, she let the boys have their time together but reacted violently to the Scotch suggestion. In the end, Manny was comforted by some hugs and some advice from his stepfather.
