'Modern Family' Episode 5 Recap: The Dunphys Fail To Fend Off Neighbours From Hell
In this week's episode of "Modern Family," the Dunphys are looking forward to having new neighbours next door. Their initially positive outlook about the prospect turned sour when an obnoxious family makes an offer for the house.
Jerry, the Dunphy's next door neighbour has put his house up for sale due to his divorce. Phil Dunphy, who is a real estate agent, was given the listing. His wife Claire loved the idea because it meant that they could choose who would be moving in next door. In fact, she already had her eye on a particular family that she approves of.
When the Thompsons came by to view the house again, Claire recruited her kids to put up a show for the potential neighbours. She asked Haley, Alex and Luke to pretend to be gardening like a happy well-rounded family to impress the buyers. She told her kids that the couple seem sophisticated and they have polite kids. To add a cherry on top, the husband is a wine collector and he also works in a PR firm, which represents numerous shoe brands. His wife revealed that they can get loads of free shoes and this gets Haley on board in wanting to have the Thompsons live next door.
When the Thompsons left, another family arrived to view the house and their arrival immediately rubbed the Dunphys the wrong way. Guest star Steve Zahn and Andrea Anders play Ronny and Amber Lafontaine. The two are loud and vulgar and so are their two kids Tammy and Ronnie Jr.
After a small chat, the Dunphys discovered that Ronny makes a living by running several medical marijuana dispensaries and Claire became livid. Phil tried to discourage Ronnie by saying that the house is dark and there are rats. Ronnie realised that Phil is trying to discourage him but misinterprets it to mean that Phil is trying to get a better offer. Ronnie decided to raise their offer by
Claire and Phil decided to try to butter up the Thompsons and convince them to raise their offer. They invited the couple over for dinner and some wine and overwhelmed them with flattery. To their surprise, the Thompsons pulled out their offer instead of raising it. It turns out, they were freaked out by Claire and Phil who came on too strong. Haley told her parents that they acted like perverts and the Thompsons were scared off because they looked like they wanted a foursome.
Phil went over to speak to Jerry and asked him to hold back on accepting the offer because he didn't like the Lafontaine Family to move in next door. Jerry agreed but after seeing how miserable he is in his bachelor pad, Phil does the right thing for his friend and let him accept the offer despite the fact that he didn't want to have that family living next door. In the end, Claire and Phil accepted their fate and they braced themselves for what's to come now that the Lafontaine Family is moving in. Guest stars Steve Zahn and Andrea Anders are expected to be seen in recurring guest roles throughout the season.
