According to ABC Medianet, Kristen Johnson of "Third Rock From The Sun" plays the character of Brenda, one of Mitch Pritchett's work colleagues from his law firm. She's been going through a tough personal crisis, and in an effort to help, the couple ends up inviting her over to spend the night. Incidentally, they just got a new white couch delivered and they soon discover that a brand new couch and house guests don't go well together. They also find themselves getting more than they bargained for when they realise just how down in the dumps Brenda really is.
Meanwhile, over at the Delgado-Pritchett household, Jay and Gloria find themselves at odds with each other again. The two both have parties that they plan to attend and they are trying to get each other to come to their respective events. They are both determined to get their own way and Jay has thought of a creative way to get himself out of Gloria's party. However, Jay didn't consider Manny who might spoil all of his carefully planned strategies.
At the Dunphy household, Phil and Claire are worried about one of their other teenagers for the first time. The usually responsible Alex is the issue this time when she shocks them with the announcement that she has a new boyfriend. Phil and Claire are worried that because of their insistent pushing and constant pressure, their daughter might have made up an imaginary boyfriend just to shut them up. When it comes to the Dunphy family, it was Haley who knew her way around boys and Alex was always more interested in studying. Claire had constantly been pushing Alex to be more outgoing and now Claire feels that she might have driven her daughter to concoct a boyfriend from her imagination.
