'Modern Family' cast celebrate Emmy success

The 2011 Emmy Awards were a scene of triumph for comedy series "Modern Family" as it took home several top awards. The mockumentary-style show follows an extended family and their day-to-day interactions. These awards further cement the show's status as a series that is equally adored by the viewing public and the critics. The series also won awards at the 2010 Emmy ceremony.

The idea for the show developed as co-creators Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan exchanged stories with each-other of their own families. The show debuted on television screens in 2009 and has since been commissioned for a second and third series.

Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen who play husband and wife 'Phil Dunphy' and 'Claire Dunphy' walked away with the awards of 'Outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series' and 'Outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series'.

"I don't know what I'm going to talk about in therapy next week now. I actually won something," remarked Bowen as she collected her award.

That the series won 'Outstanding supporting actor' had an air of inevitability about it as Burrell had to fight off competition from 3 fellow cast members out of the remaining 5 nominees for the accolade. The unlucky losers from "Modern Family" were Ed O'Neill (as Jay Pritchett), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (as Mitchell Pritchett) and Eric Stonestreet (as Cameron Tucker).

The show also won awards for 'Outstanding comedy series', 'Outstanding writing for a comedy series' and 'Outstanding directing for a comedy series'.

Fans in Australia can currently enjoy the second series every Tuesday on Ten from 7:30pm.
