Disney and Pixar's latest offering "Monsters University" raked in $82 million at the weekend box office, including an estimated $137 million worldwide. This marks the second largest opening for Pixar after Toy Story 3.

"Monsters University" is a prequel to 2001's "Monsters, Inc." The animated blockbuster features the voices of Billy Crystal and John Goodman as monsters Mike and Sulley who failed from the college's scare program.

Dave Hollis, the executive vice president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios said that the movie was hyped-up by word of mouth. "It definitely exceeded our expectations," he said adding that "The first film was so beloved and set such a high bar so we're ecstatic."

In Australia, Pixar's 14th film earned $6.4 over the weekend. On the other hand, Brad Pitt's "World War Z" soars at number 2 earning $66 million in the US despite negative publicity prior to its opening.

The latest zombie movie earned an estimated $110 million in global ticket sales. It earned $1.1 million in Australia during its opening last Thursday.

The movie is based from the 2006 novel by Max Brooks about a retired U.N. employee, played by Pitt, who was assigned to find a way to stop the zombie pandemic.

"World War Z" is produced by Plan B Entertainment, which the actor co-owns and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

"Monsters University" and "World War Z" both opened in Australia last June 20.
