Mothers' Day 2013 would be an unforgettable date for former Glee Star Charice Pempengco if her planned public admission over national television that she is a lesbian would push through.

While any public outing of her gender preference would only confirm what has long been speculated in the Philippines and overseas about her liking women, what is ironic about its timing is that her controversial image changes is said to be the result of her rebellion at her mum, Raquel Pempengco, a singer in her younger days.

Charice's musical career, after all is an extension of her mother's unfulfilled personal ambitions which she gave a new life by mentoring Charice until the young singer became runner up in a Philippine singing competition.

Raquel, a single mum, was a band vocalist who brought Charice along her gigs, explaining why Charice's choice of competition songs then were 1980s hits such Whitney Houston, Maria Carey and Celine Dion songs. She also influenced Charice's fashion then that prior to her international career, the mother-daughter team were often seen in similar outfits and hairstyles and were inseperable.

The tandem appeared to be on good terms until lately when they had a falling out after Charice's decision to become more independent of her mum. But mum and daughter supported each other during trying times in their lives, including the murder of Charice's father and Raquel's clash with her own mum.

However, their gap widened when Charice drastically changed her image recently and looks from feminine to masculine, which led to further speculations on her sexual identity.

Now on the verge of publicly acknowledging her gender preference, more details of her alleged love life were made public by a Philippine gossip show on the eve of her outing. The programme, The Latest, named two women with whom the 21-year-old singer has been romantically linked.

First is her personal assistant and road manager, Courtney Blooding, who replaced Charice's long-time former Filipino manager. Courtney is an American Idol contestant and was the subject of rumours that she and Charice, at one time were a couple based on observed closeness between the two women and the numerous times they were photographed together, suggesting a relationship beyond talent-manager.

The speculations were further fuelled by a song that Courtney allegedly sang for Charice.

Besides Courtney, The Latest also named an upcoming Filipina singer who competed in a local TV singing competition where Charice served as judge as the new alleged love interest of Charice. She is one of the six members of the girl band AKA JAM.

The two allegedly spent time together in Charice's house in Laguna, but had to break up after the new singer's mother reportedly claimed back by force her daughter.

The hosts of The Latest hinted that these events in Charice's life, which are affecting her international career, are part of the young woman's rebellion phase at her mother.

Besides cutting her hair short and styling it to look like Psy, Charice also had several tattoos in her body, which displeased her grandmother, with whom Raquel had a falling out in the past.

However, the two elder women are now obviously reconciled and have joined forces in expressing their disagreement with Charice's masculine appearance. But they insist they are supportive of her other choices in life, including her coming out.
