Mother’s Day Gone Cold for Kobe Bryant: Kobe Disputes with Mom over Childhood Memento
In his May 4 tweet, Long time Los Angeles and future Hall-of-Famer, Kobe Bryant, expresses his sentiments about his running dispute with his mother over the ownership of his childhood memorabilia amounting to $1.5 million, Forbes report.
The dispute is untimely for the coming Mother's Day.
Kobe is heartbroken for he never thought that his very own mother will sell his memento for her own gain. She was the very first person he expected to be sentimental about these items. When he left his things to his mother years ago, he was under the impression that she will take care of them. He thought that these possessions were priceless for both of them.
The on-going dispute started when Kobe's mother, Pamela Bryant, entered an agreement with Goldin Auctions to sell Kobe's childhood mementos - including high school game-worn uniforms, NBA championship rings and high school varsity letters.
Goldin Auctions is a New Jersey based company known for its sports memorabilia auctions. The company has already given Pamela an advanced payment of $450,000 which she used to build a new house.
The dispute got worse when Kobe said that he never gave his mother permission to sell the items and that he did not authorize the auction. He is now suing Goldin Auctions for the unauthorized selling of his keepsakes.
While mother and sons are not directly suing each other in court, the success of the case depends primarily on whether Kobe gave the items to his mother or not.
Pamela testified under oath that her son has given her the memorabilia a few years back saying that he no longer needs them. On the other hand, Kobe with wife Vanessa, signed under oath that Kobe wanted the items back few years ago because he wants his children to have them. Husband and wife also testified, under penalties of perjury, that his mother was lying and that she gained possession of the memorabilia behind his back.
Kobe is really heartbroken about the dispute. According to ESPN, Kobe is emotional to put emphasis on the fact that he is suing the auction house and not his mother. But then, if Kobe wins, his mother is entitled to repay Goldin Auctions the $450,000 she already spent in her new house.
The legal dispute will surely take a toll on the mother and son's relationship for it revolves around the question of who is telling the truth. This case requires concrete evidence that might compel Kobe and Pamela to say more hurtful statements against each other.
From the look of it, the case will be an endless battle of he-said, she-said, but sadly between a mother and son... between families. And, the jury has to decide.
A case like this is common between families. This is the case called disputed gift claims where the jury has to decide whether the items were given as gift or not.
But, Kobe and Pamela's dispute is unique in such a way that a mother's love is being questioned as her own son was the one calling her a liar.
