Motown star and founder of 1960s girl group the Marvelettes, Gladys Horton, died on Wednesday in Sherman Oaks.

She was 66. The Marvelettes are famous for their song, “Please Mr. Postman,” the first No. 1 hit for Motown Records. The group paved the way for other girl groups to break into the music scene like Martha and the Vandellas and the Supremes.

According to her son, Vaughn Thornton, she passed away in a nursing home after suffering from a stroke.

The Marvelettes originated from Detroit. Horton became the group's lead singer in 1961 at the age of 15 in 1961 when they hit it big with their song “Please Mr. Postman.”

The song has proved to be so popular that another version of the song was recorded by the Carpenters in 1974; also becoming a hit and one of the only eight songs in the charts to be sung by two different artists and top the Hot 100.

Other Marvelettes hits include “Playboy” and “Beechwood 4-5789.” Horton remained the lead singer of the group until 1965 and left in 1967. The group was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2007.
