MP Ed Husic, Australia’s First Muslim Frontbencher, Sworn In Using Koran Gets Mixed Views
Federal Labor MP Ed Husic was subjected to a mix of kind and harsh religious backlash from netizens because a Koran was used for his swearing in.
Within the night, Mr Husic Facebook page where barraged with harsh religious comments from angry Australians who took him being sworn with a Koran a direct insult to religion.
Facebook user Dinki Di Shiela wrote: You have created history of the worst order, to swear in Koran!! This is Australia with Australian laws. We are still Part of the Commonwealth. I don't care what your personal religion is but all throughout our history, all Nationalities with other Religious beliefs have been sworn in on the Bible and have been proud to do so. I am totally disgusted!! Sharia Law next on your agenda is it?
One comment went: Swore to serve Australia using the same book terrorists do to serve Al-Quaeda... Disgusting."
Ross Peace wrote: Our allegiance should have been to Queen and country first Ed. That means saying the oath on the holy Bible not the Koran... Shame, Shame, Shame. I am so disappointed in this government that they don't have the spine to stand up for the Australian way of life."
Therese Pearce commented: Hell I might just have to use Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs next time I take the oath for Asutralia.
However, come this morning, there were already Facebook users commenting congratulating Mr Husic saying that they were impressed with Mr Husic's loyalty to his Religion.
Facebook user Chris Eastwood wrote: Dear Ed, it is disappointing that so many of my countrymen have chosen to deride you. I applaud your choice to be sworn in on the holy book that you have your faith in rather than some other book for which to you is no more than the book of another faith. So many choose to swear on the Bible when it in fact means no more to them than does Snow White. I applaud your stance on moderate religious views and hope that you continu to follow the stance that church and state remain separate entities. I wish you all the best in following your moral compass when representing the views and needs of your electorate in the exercising of your mandate.
Greg Wilkins commented: Ed, congratulations on the promotion and commiserations for the idots who dislike your personal choice of what you swore on. It is shameful that so many of us do not understand that our government is secular and that it is separated from any religion. What you personally choose to swear an oath against is entirely your personal choice and has nothing to do with the governance of our land. As an atheist, I am a lot more comfortable with a moderate Muslim in government than I am with some of the extreme Christians that are lining up hoping to take your place.
During the oath taking yesterday, Governal-general Quentin Bryce did not have the slightest clue that the act will provoke outrage from some Australians.
Rather, she was optimistic about the "great day for multiculturalism."
In an interview with ABC back in 2010, Mr Husic talked about his being Muslim, "If someone asks me Are you Muslim, I say yes. And then if someone says Well do you pray and go to a mosque and do all the other things that are associated with the faith? I say no. I often get told that I described myself as non-practising when in actual fact I don't go round saying that. Like I just say I'm Muslim."
