The most happening awards in the music industry - 2014 MTV Video Music Awards have announced their nominations and it is surprising to see that many famous artists like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Britney Spears have not made it to the list! Meanwhile, Queen Bey leads the pack with a whopping eight nominations in various categories.

Past winner including Britney Spears and Lady Gaga who released "Britney Jean" and "ARTPOP" respectively, were snubbed completely by MTV this year. So are Rihanna (whose music video for "Pour it Up" proved that she could twerk like a stripper) and Justin Bieber!

One Direction too has been ignored from this year's nominations all together.

Female artists are leading the nominations for the 2014 MTV VMA's. Apart from Beyonce, other female nominees include Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea (nominated for "Fancy" and Grande's "Problem"), Miley Cyrus (nominated for Video Of The Year for "Wrecking Ball") and Katy Perry (Best Female Video and Collaboration Of The Year for "Dark Horse").

Pharrell Williams is the only man nominated for Video Of The Year (for "Happy") along with Jay Z (and Beyonce) for "Drunk in Love."

Surprise nominations of the year include controversial photographer and music director Terry Richardson who directed Miley Cyrus' naked anthem "Wrecking Ball," which later became the most viewed video on YouTube.

Other surprise nominee includes new British musician Sam Smith, who has been nominated for Best Male Video and Artist To Watch; and Sia whose "Chandelier" grabbed nominations for Video Of The Year and Best Choreography.

The MTV 2014 Video Music Awards are scheduled to take place on Sunday, August 24 at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Live telecast on MTV will air at 9 p.m. ET/PT. So far Ariana Grande, Usher and 5 Seconds of Summer have been confirmed as performers.

Predictably Lorde has been up for Best Rock Video nomination for "Royals." Here is the complete list of MTV Video Music Awards Nominations for 2014, as released by MTV.
