Visitors to the 2011 Munich Oktoberfest made history as they drank 7.5 million liters of beer, setting a new record for this very popular festival.

Last year's revelers consumed around 7 million liters of beer, which was the record high until it was overtaken with this year's new record.

Meanwhile, some 6.9 million visitors made it to the 17-day celebrations, only 200,000 short of the record turnout. In 2010, the number of visitors was recorded at 6.4 million.

Munich's annual beer-drinking festival ended last Monday on a high note, especially because despite the huge turnout, there was less violence. According to a Reuters report, there were only about 58 conflicts of people knocking one another over the head with steins.

The news agency also reported that partygoers consumed 118 oxens and 53 calves, along with hundreds of thousands of roast chicken and pork sausages.

Munich mayor Christian Ude described the 2011 Munich Oktoberfest as "Dream Oktoberfest".
