Muslims in Australia's state of Victoria have today expressed solidarity with those protesting across Egypt against the regime of Hosni Mubarak.

The Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV), the peak representative body of Muslims in the state, said these protests have proved that genuine change against authoritarian regimes comes from ordinary people who yearn for fairness and equality. Egyptians have not waited for the army or any political party to provide them their rights; they have sought justice themselves.

Executive committee member Nazeem Hussain said "We are shocked to learn that the Egyptian police forces are responsible for killing and wounding scores of protestors. In addition, we are extremely concerned about the use of torture on those who are arrested or detained

"The excessive force of the Egyptian police is a manifestation of the brutality and heavy-handedness of the Mubarak regime. Moreover, it is of great concern that after several days of absence they are once again returning to the streets with accounts they are suppressing the people's right to protest" said Hussain.

He continued, "It is truly inspiring to see people of all religious backgrounds put aside their differences and insist on their collective right to self-determination and freedom. We are heartened to see images of Christians protecting Muslims in prayer from police attacks"

Vice President Ramzi Elsayed commented on the safety of those in Egypt "We pray that there are no further casualties and that the current regime responds to the collective voice of the people and stands down. It is also incumbent on the international community to support the Egyptian people and not prop up despotic regimes that do not represent their people. This has proved unsustainable and unjust."

He continued: "We pray that the future of Egypt sees legitimate elections, a transparent and accountable government, freedom of expression, and greater support for the vulnerable members of its society".

The ICV is endorsing the upcoming rally on 4 February 2011 in support of Egyptians in Egypt at the State Library of Victoria.
