NASCAR: Jeff Gordon Captures Record Fifth Win 20 Years After His First
Jeff Gordon had youth, vigor and promise the first time he won the Brickyard 400. Now he has gray hair, two children and most of all, a record breaking fifth NASCAR win at Indy.
Yahoo! Sports reports that the 43-year old race car driver celebrated the 20th anniversary of his 1st win at Nascar in the most fitting way possible by capturing his fifth. His first one came when the the celebratory kissing of the Yard of Brick was not yet in fashion, now he has his two children by his side to do the honors.
''If you can do it here, you can do it anywhere,'' said Gordon ''It's certainly going to be a huge confidence boost for this team. We recognize the significance of this. 'We saw we were points leaders, we won at Kansas, but I don't know if we believed we were capable of winning this championship this year. We do now.''
After leading the Sprint Cup standing for 13 of the last 14 weeks, Gordon won in spectacular, movie style fashion. Hendrick teammate Kasey Kahne was leading the race 70 laps in but slowed down due to a precautionary gas tank problem, putting the outcome into Gordon's hands.
His fate ofpssing Kahne rested on a restart which historically has been his weakness. Luckily, the race leader picked the lower inside lane for the restart and Gordon was positioned on the outside. The position advantage gave him the opportunity to shift into fourth gearand racepast Keane and from there on out, he cruised to the victory.
''I think we both knew that was for the win,'' Gordon said of Kahne. ''Out of nowhere, I have the restart of my life at the most important moment that you could ask for in a race, in a season, at a race like this. That was just awesome.''
Team owner Hendrick chimed in that he had no favourite in the said situation and was only hoping that his prized drivers willnot get hurt.
Due to the restart Kahne eventaully fell out and finished sixth. Kyle Busch finished second, 2.325 seconds behind Gordon, and was followed by Joe Gibbs for third place.
Apart from his victory twenty years ago, Gordon also won at the track in 1998, 2001 and 2004.
