The highly anticipated film Thor has just released a new trailer. The film is an adaptation of the eponymous Marvel Comics starring Australian actor Chris Hemsworth in the titular lead and Black Swan actress Natalie Portman as Jane Foster in the female lead.

Kenneth Branagh (Henry V) directed the film. It was because of Branagh, more known to many as Gilderoy Lockheart in Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire, that Portman took the role of Jane and reportedly turned down Gravity set to be directed by Guillermo del Toro.

"It was actually not something I was dying to do. No Thor in particular, but a big movie," Portman said in an interview withn Total Film earlier this year.

"When I heard Ken was doing it, I said, 'Wow that is a daring and interesting idea... Then I met Ken and he was someone I was extremely interested to get to spend three months with. It was probably the first, or one of the first times that my expectations were actually exceeded."

According to its official synopsis, the film Thor spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the centre of the story is the mighty Thor. Thor is a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war.

As a result, Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins, and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful, young scientist, Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, has a profound effect on Thor as she ultimately becomes his first love. It's while on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
