Former NBA player Dikembe Mutombo also encouraged everyone to support the league's typhoon relief efforts.

"All my support to the entire Filipino population," Lakers star Pau Gasol also tweeted. "More than 10,000 deaths and millions of people affected by #Haiyan," Gasol wrote on Twitter.

NBA Cares is the league's global community outreach programme. It has helped address many significant problems and issues in the society such as education, family development and health crisis.

On Friday, super typhoon Haiyan made its landfall to the Philippines. Haiyan was deemed at the strongest typhoon of the year. It has certainly caused widespread damage across the central Philippines due to its sustained winds measured at 315 kilometres per hour.

Thousands of people were feared dead and missing. Power and communications went down in several affected provinces. Streets were flooded. Houses, buildings and even churches were destroyed. In October, the Philippines were hit by a strong earthquake. The last thing that the Filipino people want was another disaster hitting the country.

Typhoon Haiyan has already made its landfall to Vietnam. As reported by BBC Weather Centre, the typhoon's strength has decreased remarkably. Nonetheless, more than half a million Vietnamese in Northern provinces have already gone to the evacuation centres.

Our thoughts and prayers go out for the Philippines and Vietnam.
