Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo could play in the NBA Developmental League as part of his rehabilitation, a source close to situation reported on Monday.

Rondo, the face of the Celtics franchise now that Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce already gone, will likely play for the Celtics' D-League affiliate team the Maine Red Claws to give him a feel of the game as he tries to recover from a torn ACL injury a year ago.

Head coach Brad Stevens said assigning Rondo to the D-League will be part of his rehab. The Celtics will have a five-game West Coast swing starting January 5, but Rondo can start practicing by playing D-League games during that time frame.

"I would make that a decision on him and our staff," Stevens said. "That is something that has been discussed, probably some positives and negatives to that, but at the end of the day, it is an option as part of his rehabilitation."

Rondo, the reigning assist champion, hasn't played a single game since sustaining an ACL injury last January 25, 2013.
