NBA News: Cleveland Cavaliers Prepared to Offer Gordon Hayward Max Offer
Cleveland is hell-bent to surround their roster with developing players in their bid to become a relevant franchise once again.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are prepared to offer Utah Jazz forward a multi-year offer sheet believed to start at $15 million a year, Yahoo! Sports reports. The club is meeting with the versatile forward today and will try to pry him away from the Utah Jazz. Hayward is a restricted free agent, meaning any offers tendered to him can be matched by the Jazz.
Hayward is targeted by the Cavaliers after failed attempts to secure a face to face with former face of the franchise LeBron James. They are also reported to visioning a backcourt comprise of the newly re-signed Kyrie Irving, number 1 pick Andrew Wiggins at shooting guard, and Gordon Hayward to play the 3. The said combination in paper would be enticing to both fans and will strike fear in the league.
Hayward was one of the only five players to average a 15-5-5 last season joining the company of LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Michael Carter-Williams. His season averages topped at 16.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists in 77 games for the Jazz last season, which he all started. He also tallied seven games with double digit rebounds and six double digit assists. His scoring was on full display on a rebuilding Jazz team, registering more than 20 points in 22 games.
It is unclear if whether the Utah Jazz is willing to match any offer for Hayward especially now that rumours have fueled that some teams are willing to dole out the maximum allowable salary for the fourth year player. With the dearth of talent in the rebuilding Jazz it would be a surprise if the team lets Hayward go without any compensation in return.
Hayward was selected 9th by Jazz in the 2010 draft out of Butler.
