NBA News: Frenchman Boris Diaw Remains with San Antonio Spurs for $22.5M/3 Years

Star Tim Duncan signed for less, role player Patty Mills chose to stay and now another key cog in the San Antonio Spurs’ 2014 champion squad is returning to Texas for another run at the NBA title in the 2014-2015 NBA season after Boris Diaw re-signed with the team for $22M.

Reliable source Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed the deal via Twitter.

Also under contract for the 2014-2015 season are Tony Parker ($12.5M), Manu Ginobili ($7M), Tiago Splitter ($9.25M) and Kawhi Leonard ($3.05). This means that the same core— albeit a year older—that won the 2014 NBA title will be returning next season in hopes of getting that elusive back-to-back championship for the Spurs franchise.

San Antonio has won five championships in the last 15 years—1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014.

Diaw’s new deal will pay him around $7.5M in 2014-2015 which means the Spurs will be under the salary cap of the projected figure of $63M. This means that San Antonio have the ability to chase another second-tier free agent in the market this offseason.

The 32-year-year old will be playing in his 12th NBA season and also had stints with the Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns and Charlotte Bobcats (now called the Hornets).

In 2013-2014, he averaged 9.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists the regular season and a similar 9.2 PPG, 4.8 RPG and 3.4 APG in the postseason. A couple of his performances stood out in the playoffs; a 26-point outburst over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the clinching Game 6 of the West Finals; and the 8 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists performance in Game 4 versus the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals.

With Diaw returning, the Spurs will again maximize the Frenchman’s versatility—shooting and passing from the big man position in the new NBA season.
