NBA News: Golden State Warriors May Tap Maccabi Tel Aviv’s David Blatt as Assistant Coach
Steve Kerr, the new head coach of the Golden State Warriors have been in talks with top Europe coach David Blatt of Maccabi Tel Aviv discussing the possibility of bringing him over to the NBA as an assistant coach for the franchise.
The Jerusalem Post is reporting that Kerr is wooing Blatt to join him at the Warriors camp in time for the 2014-2015 NBA season.
The 55-year-old Blatt, who is born in Massachusetts, Boston is an Israeli-American who has been a head coach since 1993 for Hapoel Galil Elyon.
"It is true that I have had conversations with teams from both sides of the Atlantic because my contract is about to end and it is only natural that I will receive information before that happens," Blatt said via the article.
"You can't coach a big team like Maccabi Tel Aviv and achieve what we have achieved without someone noticing. I'm not as interested in everything that is being talked about as much as you think. I haven't received any offers at the moment. There have been talks but my goal at the moment is to win the Israeli championship and we'll see what happens after that."
By 1999, he joined the Maccabi Tel Aviv as assistant and became head coach for that squad three years later. He also coached Treviso (2005-2007), the Russian National Team (2006-2012), Efes (2007-2008), Dynamo Moscow (2008-2009), Aris (2010) before returning to Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2010 until the present.
Blatt led Maccabi to the Euroleague championship for the 2013-2014 season. He also had a successful stint in the 2012 London Olympics leading the Russians to the bronze medal.
Kerr, who will be in his first year as head coach, is planning to bring in two veteran mentors in his staff. Kerr has never had any coaching experience— as head or as an assistant—but was the general manager of the Phoenix Suns from 2007 to 2010.
Kerr has some hard convincing to do however. Reports are saying that the Cleveland Cavaliers are offering the head coaching position and that the Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to tap him as an assistant as well.
