NBA News: Minnesota Timberwolves Place Chase Budinger on Trading Block
With an abundance of players on the wing positions, the Minnesota Timberwolves placed small forward Chase Budinger on the trading block with the weight of his million player option for next season hanging as extra baggage. Nevertheless, the Timberwolves are finding out there are still a handful of teams interested to acquire the services of the veteran swingman.
As reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Detroit Pistons and the Houston Rockets are included in the list of teams who have already inquired about the services of Budinger. The Pistons may be looking up to bolster its starting line-up with the injuries to Jodie Meeks and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Meeks was signed to an almost million per year salary but is sidelined for a minimum of two months. The Pistons have been looking for outside sniping to free up post play for the likes of Andre Drummond, Josh Smith and Greg Monroe.
Houston, on the other hand, is the team that drafted Budinger and is looking to bring him back to strengthen a bench that was heavily decimated by trades in the offseason in an effort to sign a third superstar such as Chris Bosh. The Rockets lost key bench guys such as Jeremy Lin, Omer Asik and Jordan Hamilton and will need perimeter shooting to allow Dwight Howard to operate down low and James Harden to have a free lane with his drives.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are in another year of rebuilding after sending out superstar forward Kevin Love to the Cleveland cavaliers for top pick Andrew Wiggins, Thaddeus Young and Anthony Bennet. The team has already a lot of wing players in Ricky Rubio, Jose Barea, Corey Brewer, Zach LaVine, Wiggins and Shabazz Muhhamad. The move is also an effort to get out of the dreaded player option of Budinger which he will likely exercise next year.
The Timberwolves are again expected to miss out on the playoffs and are also busy locking up Rubio to a long term contract. It will need a lot of cap space in the future to re-sign its young players after it has already locked up Rubio and most recently center Nikola Pekovic via contract extension.
