Both the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets are struggling so far in the 2013-2014 NBA regular season. A roster tweak could be a solution in arresting the recent bad start for 2013.

The New York Daily News is reporting that talks between both ball clubs are “intensifying” and both are highly considering an Iman Shumpert-for-Kenneth Faried exchange.

Both athletic similar contracts—Shumpert is set to be paid $8.3M and Faried $7.4M for the next three years—and a straight-up deal for each other works under the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Both players also have qualifying offers in the third and final year of their deals and they can choose to become free agents before the 2015-2016 NBA season.

No deal between the Nuggets and Knicks is imminent, but the trade talk appears to be initiated by the New York front office as they are desperate to improve on a 2-4 win-loss record to start the season. New York also lost center Tyson Chandler to injury and will be out for four to six weeks.

Shumpert, drafted 17th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft, has career averages of 8.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game in over two seasons with the Knicks. Meanwhile, Faried has logged in 11.0 points and 8.6 rebounds with the Nuggets, which drafted Faried as the 22nd overall pick, also in 2011.

The news out of New York is that Shumpert and Knicks head coach Mike Woodson can’t see eye-to-eye on the role of the 23-year-old guard-forward. Woodson has given Shumpert the minutes (29.7 MPG this season), but the latter has been struggling recently, especially in the last two games.

If the Knicks can indeed trade for Faried, they’ll get an energetic power forward that should complement star Carmelo Anthony and replace Chandler’s work on the boards.

The Nuggets have also been struggling off the gates winning just two of their six games to start the season.
