The Houston Rockets could send a first-round picks to the Orlando Magic for former All-Star playmaker Jameer Nelson to solve their current woes at the point guard position.

According to the latest trade rumour, the Rockets are now in deep need of having a reliable playmaker after Patrick Beverley suffered a fractured right hand and will miss six weeks.

The Rockets are currently in the top-8 of highly competitive Western Conference standings, but their good run is threatening to make a wrong turn because of the lack of solid point guard on their roster.

Jeremy Lin, who averaged 18 points and 6 assists before suffering a sprained knee and back problems, has shown flashes of brilliance this season, particularly his dramatic improvement on his jump shots.

However, the former Harvard hotshot has been inconsistent since returning from injury and the recent slide (losing five of their last 10 games) really alarmed the Rockets front office.

This week, reports circulated that the Rockets asked for the availability of Brooklyn Nets All-Star guard Deron Williams. Houston is reportedly willing to surrender both Lin and disgruntled centre Omer Asik to land an elite point guard like Williams. Unfortunately, the Nets backed out from trade negotiations.

Still loaded with draft picks over the next few years, the Rockets could use some of their assets to plug in the loophole at the point guard spot. While Lin is a solid player in the league, he's proven to be more effective coming off the bench than starting.

ESPN NBA insider Marc Stein reported the Magic is willing to give up Nelson for the first round pick.

"The Magic, according to the latest rumbles, would surrender Nelson today if offered a future first-round pick for him. Orlando GM Rob Hennigan continues to chase draft picks and young assets above all else as he remakes the Magic," Stein stated on his Twitter page.

The Rockets could trade Patrick Beverley or perhaps Aaron Brooks and a first round pick for Nelson who is averaging 13.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 dimes and has been a vocal leader for the young Magic squad.

"He's been great for our guys. There's little things that go on through the course of the year, whether it's: How do you talk to the ballboys? How do you act in the hotel? When you get in the cab, do you tip? Those are things veterans take care of. A coach is not always around. And then (there's) his ability on the floor to guide guys," Magic head coach Jacque Vaughn spoke of Nelson during an interview with Delaware County Times.
