NBA Trade News: Nets To Target Grizzlies' Mike Conley In Next Year's Free Agency
The Brooklyn Nets are strongly considering Memphis Grizzlies’ Mike Conley as their next franchise point guard and are reportedly believed to be serious in pursuing the gritty playmaker.
The Nets remain winless in the 2015-2016 NBA regular season, recently falling to the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday with a 103-96 defeat. Despite the winless mark, Lionel Hollins’ core starters looked solid in their previous outing, but the PG position has been lacking depth, with Jarrett Jack as the only reliable point guard in their lineup.
In the past three games he played, Jack averaged 14.0 points and 6.7 assists, while playing 32.3 minutes. However, Jack’s errors have been costly for the Nets’ early campaign, averaging 3.0 turnovers per game. His most recent woes in passing the ball and reading Hollins’ playbook came against the Bucks, where he turned the ball over five times.
Conley, on the other hand, has been commanding the floor very well for the Grizzlies. So far, he has averaged 1.4 turnovers in five games, and has a relatively higher efficiency rate, scoring 13.4 points in just 28.8 minutes on the floor. Last season, Conley only managed 2.2 turnovers per game, along with 15.8 points.
Under the helm of Hollins, who polished Conley in Memphis into an All-Star point guard, the 8-year NBA veteran would surely flourish in the Nets’ new offensive system. The idea of having Conley as Brooklyn’s next star playmaker is not farfetched, but the timing could wait until the 2016 free agency, when the Nets will have a chance to pursue their target point guard, according to Chris Herrington of the Commercial Appeal.
“Mike Conley’s impending free agency is unlikely to garner as many headlines as Marc Gasol’s did last season, but expect the Brooklyn Nets to be for Conley what the Knicks were for Gasol: The big market alternative to whom he’ll be connected,” Herrington wrote. “Conley is thought by those around the team to be the most likely top target, with the presence of his former coach, Lionel Hollins, presumed to be a drawing card.”
ESPN’s Mike Mazzeo thinks it makes too much sense for the Nets to target Conley, considering his relationship with Hollins and Brooklyn’s ability to offer a max contract, especially when the NBA teams’ salary cap ballons due to the league’s new massive TV deal.
However, Matt Moore of CBS Sports believes the idea of Conley suiting up for another team next season is a “dream that won’t be made,” given his strong ties with All-Star centre Marc Gasol, who is locked up for a few more years after signing a contract extension in June.
“Stranger things have happened, but from here, especially with his good friend Marc Gasol in Memphis for the long-term, the idea of Conley going anywhere, much less Brooklyn, seems like a dream that won't be made in that concrete jungle,” Moore wrote.
It is still too early to speculate about Conley’s future, but his impending free agency status suggests there is a chance the Grizzlies point guard could wear a different jersey next season.
