NBA Trade News: Warriors interested in trading for Magic forward Channing Frye
The Golden State Warriors are looking to bolster their lineup amid a historical start in the 2015-2016 NBA regular season.
According to CSN Bay Area’s Monte Poole, Warriors general manager Bob Myers and the team’s front office are studying the trade market this season, possibly looking for a stretch four that would fit in the defending champs’ pace and space small ball lineup. Poole’s report is in line with the declining performance of Marreese Speights, who has been unable to deliver for the Warriors this season.
“Warriors general manager Bob Myers, like most executives, doesn’t talk trade-possibility specifics. But he surely realizes that when Curry, Thompson and Green are off the floor, scoring comes with considerable toil and strife,” Poole wrote. “The front office is studying the trade market, because if Speights can’t find his form, and soon, the Warriors will seek out another stretch four, somebody Walton or Kerr can call when they need a scoring punch.”
Speights was the main big man off the bench for the Warriors last season, averaging a career-high 10.4 points per contest. He was an offensive weapon for Golden State and a key player whenever the team rests their starters. However, his output this season has declined with the emergence of Festus Ezeli, averaging only 5.0 points while playing a 9.8 minutes per game.
According to Adam Luridsen of the San Jose Mercury News, the Warriors might be interested in pursuing a trade for Orlando Magic forward Channing Frye.
Frye would be a good fit for the Warriors as he is described as a legitimate stretch-four due to his outside shooting. Frye is only averaging 6.0 points a game, but on a limited basis, playing 17.8 minutes on the floor. His 44.7 percent shooting from the field and downtown would certainly serve beneficial for the Warriors’ second unit.
But according to David Aldridge of NBA.com, the Magic seems to be committed in growing their young core of talents along with their veteran players like Frye and CJ Watson. Moreover, ever since Magic coach Scott Skiles moved Frye into the starting lineup, the Magic has three of four, suggesting that the 32-year-old would probably not go anywhere before the deadline.
The Warriors are currently enjoying one the best season of the franchise as the defending champs lead the entire league with a 26-1 record. However, with the road to a consecutive NBA title would not getting any easier, the Dubs could use some help off the bench from a quality player.
