Although the Washington Wizards have reached the 0.500 mark at this point of the regular season, the Washington front office is apparently not contented with just mediocrity and wants to make a splash either via trade before the deadline.

One target according to NBA.COM is Detroit Pistons big man Greg Monroe, who can help the Wizards improve their post presence especially on the offensive end.

It is a curious attempt from the Wizards’ camp which already has Marcin Gortat manning the paint. The Polish center is averaging a respectable 12.1 PPG, 8.7 RPG and 1.6 BPG in 40 games in his first year with the Wizards. They also have another big in Nene, who has logged in 13.2 PPG and 5.7 RPG in 33 games.

For his part, the 23-year-old Monroe is having a respectable statistical season averaging 14.2 PPG an 8.7 RPG in 41 games for the Pistons.

The Pistons’ struggles have mainly been attributed to the team’s seemingly disjointed rotation. Detroit acquired forward Josh Smith over the summer despite already having big men Monroe and another stud in Andre Drummond.

The ultra-big line-up featuring all three in the frontcourt have so far not worked consistently for the Pistons, which holds a 17-24 win-loss card so far or just 9th place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Dealing away one of the bigs—particularly Monroe, who will be a free agent after the 2013-2014 season if he does not sign a qualifying offer—could be the solution for Detroit.

Here’s a probable exchange (via ESPN Trade Machine) between the Pistons and Wizards, with help from the Sacramento Kings that will address the respective teams’ weaknesses:

Detroit-Washington-Sacramento 3-Team 4-Player Deal

Detroit Pistons acquire Marcus Thornton ($8.1M)
Sacramento Kings acquire Marcin Gortat ($7.7M)
Washington Wizards acquire Greg Monroe (4.1M) + Jonas Jerebko ($4.5M)

Logic for the Pistons: They unload one of their big men and create a more traditional and hopefully more effective starting five: Drummond-Smith-Singler-Thornton-Jennings is a well balanced line-up. In other words, drop the ultra-big but ultra-slow line-up already.

Logic for the Kings: Gortat will be a good fit alongside star forward DeMarcus Cousins. They get a legit center and move Cousins to PF. Moving Thornton and his scoring will not hurt as much because they already have Rudy Gay.

Logic for the Wizards: They get a targeted player (Monroe) who can they build around alongside star PG John Wall.
