NBA trade scenario: Rockets should trade Ty Lawson for Pistons' Brandon Jennings
The Houston Rockets should consider trading one of their point guards for Detroit Pistons PG Brandon Jennings, according to the latest trade talks around the league.
The Rockets remain in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Western Conference, with the team carrying a 22-20 record. However, their seventh spot in the Wild Wild West does not seem too reassuring for the Rockets, who have been struggling to be consistent in the 2015-2016 NBA regular season.
With the trade deadline nearing, the Rockets could use the opportunity to boost their lackluster backcourt by bringing in a scoring guard. According to Gerald Bourguet of Hoops Habit, one available and ideal target for the Rockets would be Jennings, who has lost his starting role with the Pistons.
In Bourguet’s trade scenario, the Rockets would send Ty Lawson in exchange for Jennings, which according to ESPN’s trade machine, is possible.
Lawson, is one of the several Rockets linked to trade rumours this season, along with Corey Brewer and All-Star centre Dwight Howard. Lawson has become a shell of himself ever since getting traded to the Rockets during the offseason, only averaging 6.2 points and 4.1 assists per game this season.
According to ESPN’s Calvin Watkins, Lawson’s representatives are seeking more playing time for the former Denver Nuggets PG elsewhere, sparking speculations about an imminent trade before the deadline.
On the other hand, Jennings, who has also been linked to trade rumours with the New York Knicks ever since returning from an Achilles injury, is on the last year of his contract with the Pistons, making him the ideal trade asset for Detroit. But president of basketball operations and head coach Stan Van Gundy insisted the team will stick with what they have for now.
"I think there's a very good chance that we don't move any of those guys before the trade deadline," Van Gundy said, reports Michigan Live.
Moreover, trading Jennings for another point guard albeit healthy is unlikely, with the Pistons already loaded in their backcourt rotation.
While the Pistons are also doing fine in the Eastern Conference with 22-18 record, they would probably need to make a trade this season to remain competitive in pushing for a postseason run.
