The Wintersun festival has come to an end and tourism officials say that whatever festival that would replace it would take years to reach or even advance the level of success that the rock n' roll nostalgia event has received.

A new festival for Coolangatta and Tweed Heads from 2011 onwards is being talked about, following the announcement that the Wintersun will be in the regional New South Whales for the succeeding three years (the least).

Tweed Tourism, Gold Coast Tourism, Gold Coast City Council and Connecting Southern Gold Coast will sit together this week to figure out what to do with the plans for a new attraction.

Jim Wilson, general manager of Connecting Southern Gold Coast, said it is still uncertain if the new event would follow the same approach used by Wintersun, or if it a totally new and fresh idea will be used.

"A lot of us feel it should be a similar festival, but I thing it could be time to try something new, such as a seafood festival or a carnival," Mr Wilson said.

"There appears to be considerable support for maintaining a nostalgia-type event similar to Wintersun though."

Wintersun was able to bring in $25 million and more than 80,000 people to the region every year. Mr Wilson believes it would take years before the same success is achieved.

"It is my feeling that, arising from these meetings, plus feedback from the many people who have phoned me, a plan to replace Wintersun in 2011 will be developed," he said.

Just last Monday, the New South Whales Government said it already owns the three-year rights to Wintersun and they may opt to extend it to six years.
