The newest star to emerge from hit television show Glee has been involved in a Botox controversy.

Filipino singer Charice Pempengco on Saturday had the cosmetic injections to make her "naturally round face" more narrow as part of the preparations for her appearance on the musical drama, celebrity cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo told ABS-CBN.

Dr Belo, who performed the procedure, said the singer's love of chewing gum caused her facial muscles to protrude.

"It's like a ball, so we are going to Botox that in order to get it flat so she will have a cuter face ... we want to give you the apple cheek look because it's cute, right?" she said in an interview.

However, Pempengco's representatives have contradicted the surgeon's statements, saying that the treatment was done to ease the muscle pain in her jaw.

"It did not hurt - it relieved the pain," her reps said, according to a

report by Us Magazine.

"You've seen her face - she doesn't have a wrinkle in it so she wouldn't need it for cosmetic purposes.

"The Glee people are thrilled with the way she looks, which is why she got the part."

Pempengco got her big break on her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show when she was only 15 years old.

She also appeared on Oprah where the talk show queen called her "the most talented girl in the world".

The 18-year-old Pempengco spoke of the pressures on her role in Glee during the interview alongside Dr Belo.

"All people will be anticipating 'How will Charice look?'," she said.

"Is she good enough to pit against [23-year-old show star] Rachel Berry?

"So of course there is tremendous pressure."

Pempengco has also previously said that she's proud to be Asian and Filipino.
